8 Steps To Clean Your Sewing Room Fast

Hey guys. I found myself overwhelmed with sewing mess again. This seems to be a pattern for me so I need to get organised.

About 6 or so months ago, I found this awesome post titled 10 steps to clean your house fast. Using this list has really helped me to keep my house 'guest ready' most of the time, even if it is only the living areas.

But the thing is, my sewing room always seems to become a creative frazzled mess again! Well seeing that a list has helped me so much with the rest of the house, I made a specific list just for my sewing space.

Now. The key to this list working for me is that it keeps me focused. I have specific goals, reminders and a plan. You can change this list how you like, but I would 110% recommend printing out a cleaning plan to keep you on task. Without the list I would clean up bits and pieces here and there with no real plan of attack. With the list I keep myself on track and motivated. You can do some steps at the same time as each other but have one main focus to go back to, keep focused!

PJ Pants - Free Sewing Pattern and Tutorial

Here it is guys! My free Pajama Pants Sewing Pattern in 5 sizes!! - 18 months to 5 years.

Pajama pants are the perfect project for teaching yourself to sew clothes.

Just before we get to the good stuff, I want to tell you the reasons why I think pajama pants are THE perfect beginners project for those who want to sew children's clothing, some of these even apply to starting out sewing adults clothing. And here are the reasons:

Tutorial - How To Get Perfectly Even Hems and Waistbands

Before I write up my pants tutorial, there is one important step we can take prior to sewing that can greatly improve the end result of our garments. (Update: here is the free kids PJ pants pattern)

I hate fiddly things when sewing, and ironing a hem is fiddly when the pants are already sewn. Same with waistbands. So here is my tip for getting the job done quickly, easily and perfectly even!

Firstly, you will need a manilla folder. You can buy these cheaply at most supermarkets or office supply stores.

Pressing Perfectly Even Hems

Notice the pre-marked folds, one of them is exactly 1inch. If you happen to buy one that isnt, just grab a ruler and mark it yourself.

Tutorial - How To Start & Finish Seams Invisibly

My Kids Clothes Week progress is slow. So, today I wanted to show you a favourite technique of mine.

Sometimes, I just detest the look of backstitching. My auto backstitch feature is usually my best buddy, but sometimes on visible seams such as a hem, backstitching is unsightly.

This is how I finish those seams.

  • Sew the seam without backstitching, starting and stopping as close together as you can. Dont worry if you are about a stitch length away, it wont be noticable. Make sure you leave nice long tail threads.
Invisible Seam Finish

  • Tie a knot with the two threads, do this on both sides.

Tips For Sewing A Bucket Hat

After sewing 6 Oliver + S Bucket Hats, I kind of feel like a bucket hat expert! The hats are not perfect, but I challenge you to go and find a RTW hat that is. :)

First of all, I tried several methods to construct the hat, and I think that Jessica from A Little Gray has the easiest method by far. Go and see her tutorial for the full run-down. Basically you complete the main fabric hat and the lining hat separately, sew them right sides together around the brims, leaving a gap for turning right side out.

Since I was sewing so many bucket hats, I had some fun chaining. If you have never chained before, you should try it out!
